Automatic VAT ID Check Against the VIES System

VIES (VAT Information Exchange System) is a central European information system that allows you to verify the validity of VAT IDs of VAT-registered entities within the European Union.

Functionality of the Solution

Within SAP, we developed an automated solution that streamlines and speeds up VAT ID validation against the VIES system. The application enables users to perform checks directly in SAP, without manually entering data on the European Commission website.

The solution verifies VAT ID validity in real time and returns a clear result (valid/invalid). This helps to meet legislative requirements and prevent errors in reporting cross-border transactions.

The check can be performed preventively using a special transaction for the mass review of suppliers, customers and their documents.

YFVIES Transaction

Enables bulk checking of:

• Customer and supplier master data
• Customer and supplier documents
• Verification of a specific VAT number

After entering the input parameters, online verification is performed via the VIES system and the ALV output with the required customer and supplier data is displayed. The “VIES Status” column, presented as a traffic light, clearly identifies the validity of each VAT number.
